The Adidas Stan Smith is arguably one of the most iconic sneakers of all time. It started out as a tennis shoe worn by its namesake in the early 1970s, but over the years it has completely transcended the sport. The shoe has become a streetwear style icon and a wardrobe staple, and now it’s entering a new realm: golf!
Last night, Adidas released a teaser video for the new shoe featuring the man himself, Stan Smith, and defending Masters champion Dustin Johnson, who will wear the shoe at Augusta this week.
Without deviating from the beloved and iconic design, Adidas has made a few updates to the classic style to ensure it aligns with its mission to end plastic waste. The upper is made with their proprietary Primegreen material, which means it contains at least 50 percent recycled content.
The golf version of the Stan Smith features a spikeless rubber outsole with traction inspired by the shoe’s original sole design. The color green symbolizes the mission of sustainable development, but also celebrates the first major championship of the year. Subtle features like a removable white kiltie that houses a Trefoil logo ball marker add golf-specific features to differentiate this style from its original tennis counterpart. Stan Smith’s photo on the tongue of the shoe is also updated so he’s wearing a golf cap.

It turns out that Stan Smith himself is an avid golfer. He plays a lot of rounds at Harbor Town Golf Links in his hometown of Hilton Head, SC, where he took his last namesake kicks for a few tries. He personally prefers the kiltie-on look and is delighted to see Adidas golfers rocking his shoes at this week’s masters tournament.
The shoe will be available on adidas.com from Wednesday April 7, but in the meantime you can pick up the new and improved Primegreen Stan Smith sneaker.
