Scottish chef Steven Gilroy is taking on a new role at Blairgowrie Golf Club.

Steven Gilroy will be joined by his wife Caroline in a clubhouse venture, which marks a break from his previous catering roles.

Steven joins the club after a stint as executive chef at the Radisson Glasgow. His CV includes head chef at Kinnaird Estate, restaurant manager at Scone Palace and roles at Dunkeld House Hotel and Castle Hotels in Pitlochry.

His wife Caroline had front-end experience at The Taybank, before a 10-year stint as a dental nurse in Dunkeld.

Steven will be in charge of the kitchen, while his wife will lead the hall team at the venue for the 2014 Junior Ryder Cup.

Head chef Steven said: ‘Caroline is from Dunkeld and I have been in Perthshire for about 20 years now. We felt the time was right to diversify when this opportunity presented itself.

The couple will operate the new business, which opens today, under the banner ‘Rockfield Catering at Blairgowrie Golf Club’.

What’s on offer?

With plans to revamp the menu, Steve and his team will offer a range of options, including pasta and a salad bar with Dunkeld smoked salmon and grilled chicken.

Meats such as sausages and steak burgers designed by a local butcher will be available, in addition to a plant-based burger as a vegan alternative.

“We’re looking to modernize the menu with an emphasis on local produce, but rest assured, traditional golfer fare like good quality bacon rolls are definitely not going away,” explained Steven.

Currently, the restaurant is open Monday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until April 1, after which the restaurant will open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Future plans for the venue

The couple plans to offer theme nights and restaurant nights on Fridays and Saturdays for guest enjoyment.

Steven commented: “We want to use the dining room a bit more with theme nights and social events, including afternoon Prosecco teas and gin tastings.”

He continued: “With a home baker, we hope this will raise the profile of the venue and offer visitors something different as we move forward.”

Caroline added: “With the new season on the horizon and hopefully the worst of the virus behind us, we look forward to getting to know members and visitors to the club.”
