Daly won the competition in 1995 and was renowned for his ability to consistently drive over 300 metres.

Despite his years of advancement – and his bizarre diet – the Californian showed he still had distance by clubbing a drive at a local high school football field.

Daly, a chain smoker who also enjoys a few beers and Hooters chicken, started his journey along busy Interstate 76 in Akron.

Starting about 50 feet back, it aims for the freeway and smashes a nice sound drive right out of the screws.

The golf legend’s shot navigates eight lanes of oblivious traffic, landing cleanly on the grounds of Archbishop Hoban High School.

Decked out in sunglasses, a baggy green t-shirt and red cargo shorts, Daly immediately turns to the watching crowd for his reaction.

We hear a woman say: “Touch!”.

And the PGA Tour star didn’t even feel the need to put on his shoes.

Golf fans have taken to social media to praise Daly’s epic drive, with an Akron resident saying he’s been “dreaming” about the shot since he was in school.

Matt Considine wrote: “Proudly went to this school and dreamed of this shot almost everyday from a third floor window.

“He has way too much club, no more than a 9-iron at the first goal post and a 3-iron at the second.

“NO MULLIGAN IF THE BALL GOES MISLADY”

“All downhill with a crosswind that tends to help a draw #golfnerd.”

But Daly’s stunt was not so well received by local authorities.

Matt Bruning, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Transportation says USA TODAY: “Driving on the highway should be limited to vehicles.

“Unfortunately, there is no mulligan if a bullet strays and hits a moving vehicle at full speed.”

And one fan asked on social media, “Isn’t that illegal?!”

Daly captured the imagination of the golfing public at the USPGA, where he stormed to an early lead.

Puffing on a cigarette during his warm-up, the former Major champion looked company in relaxed floral pants, which oddly featured a number of SKULLS.

And the fearless star insisted “I’m not afraid to die” after revealing he had bladder cancer in 2020.

While Daily enjoyed life in his Hooters adopted home over Masters weekend.

Waitress Madalynn Grace shared a photo of herself and a bearded Daly posing for her instagram Account.

His accompanying caption read, “I told @pga_johndaly he was a badass…he said I was too.”

Daly will compete in this year’s Open Championship at St Andrews, which begins on July 14.
